PAINTING ON METALS

Yes, you can paint on Metal

You can do this, yes you can!  There are a lot of metal fences, gates and the like out there.  We are asked all the time what to do with metal rust, paint chipping and decay.  Well, you can replace the metal work, which is the most expensive approach, or, re-condition it.

If you’ve elected to re-condition, it will take a bit-of-time, nonetheless, you can do this.  Obviously, you can engage a sub-trade to do it.  Your choice, pending budget constraints.

To re-condition metal, the very best approach is to sand/grind the decay down to the bare metal.  The best sanding approach is metal sandpaper with a power-sander.  The most effective approach is an Angle Grinder with a paint stripping pad.  This is the quickest approach, however, most homeowners don’t have this tool.  It’s a little expensive and, use caution using it…very high speed!  This exercise is likely to reveal just how bad the decay is.  If the rust is such that you have holes, it’s likely that replacement is in the picture.  Rust holes can be repaired with Metal Bondo (brand), which is not a bad choice, however, Bondo is funky to work with.  With a little patience, you can do it.  Mixed properly, it dries hard in about 30 minutes, ready to sand.

Let’s assume you don’t have rust holes.  You’re just sanding/grinding off the old paint and surface rust.  Once you’ve done this, you are ready to prime the metal.  The very best primer on the market can be acquired at Catalina Paints Store.  It’s called Rust Destroyer (not sure what other stores carry this product).  Hold on to your seat, it’s about $57 a quart, yes, a quart!  However, no question, it’s the best.  With this product, you may not see rust again.  Double coat/prime the entire surface.

Your final step will be to apply the Commander (brand) Paint product, also at Catalina Paints Stores.  Not sure if other outlets carry the Commander product.  Runs about $117 per gallon.  Off the shelf, it’s Black in color.  You may be able to find it in White as well.  Unsure if it can be colorized…never requested.  There you go!  If I can help in any other way, DM me.
