Let’s Paint! Tips and Tricks
As a long, long-time resident in El Segundo and working there as well, I'm frequently asked by local homeowners "what's the best exterior wood paint to use on my deck or fence?" To be sure, I've tested most all the brands.
Bar none...the very best is Sherwin Williams, Emerald Rain Refresh. It's actually fairly new on the market. Nonetheless, in my opinion, it's the best, with deep saturation and smooth coverage. You might have guessed, yep, it's fairly expensive at around $80 a gallon. By comparison, if you acquire a cheaper brand, you may be redoing the job inside of 5 years. With Rain Refresh, you may get 20+ years without touching it.
You can apply Rain Refresh to bare Douglas Fir, Redwood, Cedar and the like. I would NOT recommend Rain Refresh for any Tropical hardwood. If your wood has an existing paint color applied, I recommend sanding most or all the paint off to assure a good bond.
